Jaipal Reddy is the lone candidate in assembly byelection

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister S Jaipal Reddy will be formally declared elected to the Rajya Sabha on September 26.

Reason, he is the only candidate in the fray!

At 1500 hours on Tuesday, when the deadline for filing nomination papers for the Andhra Pradesh assembly by-election closed, the Janata Dal nominee was the only candidate who had handed in his papers!

The by-election follows the death of veteran Communist Party of India leader Nallamala Giriprasad.

Two sets of nomination papers were filed on Reddy's behalf after he personally took oath before Assistant Returning Officer S D Kamalakar in the state assembly premises.

Scrutiny will be taken up on Wednesday and Reddy's election will be formally announced at 1500 hours on September 26.

Reddy's tenure in the Rajya Sabha will extend to the biennial elections slated in March.
