M K Basha is a very lucky man.

In September last year, Basha, a parlimentary reporter from Delhi, found himself US $ 10 million (Rs 45 crore) richer. Of course, he never expected to win.

So how did this grand win come about? Simple. Basha logged on to Free Lotto, a ritual he indulges in every evening and picked his 6 numbers. The next thing he knew, he was a millionaire ten times over. He will get this money over the next 30 years, as per the games rules. But, I am sure, he isn't complaining.

Before you get too excited, ponder over this.

Amazing Fact #1: The odds of being struck by lightning are 1 in 600,000. You are more likely to be struck by a thunderbolt than you are likely to strike a jackpot.

Neverthless, if you still nurse some hope, try Freelotto. You can pick six numbers between 1 to 54 and you participate in six such games daily. There are supplementary games and if you patiently play all of them, you qualify to play the 'SuperBucks', which is what Basha won.

Startling Fact #2: Lottery winners usually blow up all their money and end up broke. Easy come, easy go.

So why do people play the lottery? Rahul Chakravorty, who is a regular at these free lotto sites says: "It's easy, takes only a few minutes and most of all it's free. It doesn't hurt me much to play. Besides, if I do win, I have great plans about what I can do with the money."

So has his dedication and loyalty paid off? Rahul shows me a $1 check from Free Lotto and says somewhat defensively: "Well, it's a beginning."

Believe-it-or-not Fact #3: A large percentage of lotto winners are above 50, who after winning usually claim that they don't need the money anymore and don't know what to do with it either!

Mr. Basha claimed that the big win would not change his life. It sure as hell would have changed mine. But in case, you're getting carried away with all this money talk, figure this out.

Sad Fact #4: Winning the lottery is no guarantee for long lasting happiness :-(. Read this story and you'll understand!

I have, however, decided to ignore the above-mentioned fact to log on to Lucky Irish. To be eligible, you need an email address (if you win, you might need to volunteer more details). For the Lucky Irish Free weekly lottery you have to pick 6 numbers between 1 to 42 or you can let the machine choose for you. Six correct numbers will give you $US 1000.

As I ponder over what I could do with a thousand dollars, I stumble across another amusing tidbit.

Funny Fact #5: Some of the most unusual purchases made by lottery winners include breast enlargements, a racehorse and a castle.

My list includes none of the above. I could do with a new machine, a cellphone, a trip or a new wardrobe. Before I go further, I stop to try out one more site. After all, the more I play, points out Rahul, the better my miniscule chances get.

This one's exciting, because it lets me play up to three times an hour. And for a chance to win US $50,000 at Imustlotto, I could push my fingers to work harder!

Did you know that people are addicted to lottery sites? Of course, the mere thought of US $50,000 gracing one's bank account can be heady and motivating. But doing this - 365 days a year - my poor fingers would surely creak and complain.

Rahul is emphatic. "You have to be consistent. You have to keep up the tempo and pace. The more you play, the better your chances. It's addictive, but it's worth it." His fiance, of course, disagrees.

I only understand this compulsion fully when I come across a warning on a lottery site.

Interesting Fact #6: This Site may be addictive, and (company name) specifically disclaims any and all liability for loss of job or breakup of marriage that may occur as a result of its over-use.

But I am cheered by the following example.

Winning Fact #7: The longest celebration by winners was by a pub syndicate from London who celebrated for almost two weeks!

Picking winning lottery numbers is an art, I discover, as I come across books on the topic. There are guides on the Basics of Winning a Lottery. A currently out-of-stock book on 'How to Dream your Lottery Number' and 'What you can do before and after your win'.

True Fact #8: Most people who complain that they never win, are usually the ones who never ever play.

So, for your only chance to win a million dollars, get clicking, folks!
