US sprinter's drug test positive

The International Amateur Athletic Federation confirmed, Friday, that the second stage of testing of US sprinter Dennis Mitchell's urine sample has also come out positive for testosterone.

The A sample, taken during an out-of-competition test on April 1 at Gainesville, Florida, had earlier tested positive, and now the IAAF confirms that sample B, taken from the same urine sampling and examined at an IAAF lab in Montreal, has also shown up positive.

Mitchell, who took bronze in the 1992 Olympics in the 100 meters and is a two time bronze winner at the World Championships as well, could be banned for two years unless he wins an appeal before the three-member doping board of the USA Track & Field association.

Ironically, Mitchell -- who, among his other achievements, has been part of two US world-record breaking relay teams, is also a president of the USATF's Athletes Advisory Committee, which has taken a hardline stance against drug use.
