Olympic bomb victim's family files suit

The family of a woman killed by a bomb at the 1996 Olympic Games at Atlanta has filed suit for damages.

The suit names AT&T, which had rented space at Centennial Olympic Park for the staging of concerts; the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games; Borg-Warner Protective Services Corporation and a second security company, Anthony Davis Inc, as defendants.

Lawyer Gilbert Deitch filed the lawsuit on behalf of Fallon Stubbs (16), whose mother Alice Hawthorne was killed by a bomb explosion at at Centennial Olympic Park. Alice's husband John Hawthorne is also a party to the suit.

Ironically, Alice Hawthorne's presence in the park had nothing to do with the Olympics. She was celebrating daughter Fallon's 14th birthday when the explosion occured, about 1:20 a.m. on July 27. Both mother and daughter were hit by shrapnel -- Fallon survived, but Alice succumbed to her injuries. Ironically, Alice Hawthorne was the only victim, though 100 others sustained injuries.

The suit charges the defendants with dereliction of duty, not maintaining security and safety in the park.
