Gill nets winner for India

Sukhbir Singh Gill's goal three minutes into the second half gave India a solitary goal victory over Canada in their opening match of the four-nation men's hockey tournament in Barcelona yesterday.

The Asian Games gold medallists took time to settle down, and though their forwards had several chances failed to split the tight Canadian defence.

In another match, Javier Arnau scored twice as Spain made a winning start defeating European champions Germany 3-1. Xavi Rivas netted the other goal while Flaorian Keller scored the lone goal for Germany.

Today Germany plays Canada while Spain takes on India. Tomorrow's matches pit Germany versus Canada and Spain against India.
