BSF win Tegh Bahadur hockey

Border Security Force, Jallandhar, won the sixth Guru Tegh Bahadur Gold Cup Hockey tournament, beating Bharat Petroleum, Bombay, 2-0 in the final at the Mahindra Stadium in Bombay on Friday.

In a final that did not rise to great heights, the armymen struck once in each half through Marius Lakra and Shinu Herenz to quell the challenge of the Bombay outfit, who yesterday won a ding-dong battle against Air India, 8-7 via the tie-breaker after after 70 minutes of regulation time and 15 minutes of extra-time failed to break a 3-3 deadlock.

Six minutes before half-time, BSF forged ahead following a counter-attack. Kuljinder Singh hit hard from inside their 25-yard line to Marius Lakra, who broke free into the circle and despatched a blinder past goalkeeper P A Bopanna.

Bopanna, who had a great tournament, came up some brilliant saves, but was again beaten in the 66th minute to another scorcher. This time from Shinu Herenz. The ball flew off Bopanna's stick to the roof of the net.

BSF bagged Rs.40,000 for their efforts while BPCL picked up Rs. 20,00. Bopanna was adjudged the player of the tournament.
