China powers to Asian TT titles

Chan Tian Yuan of China defeated compatriot Hao Shuai 21-9, 18-21, 15-21, 13-21 in an engrossing title-clash to emerge champion in the 15th Asian Cup Table Tennis tournament in Bombay on Sunday.

Earlier, India's hope Chetan Baboor, fell to the eventual champion and unranked Yuan in the semi-finals.

Shua got $3,000 for his triumph while Baboor, who had stormed into the semi-finals on Saturday night by ousting Yang Shun Hsiang of Chinese Taipei in four games, won $1,250.

The women's final was also between two unseeded Chinese players. Tang Yuan defeated Guo Yue 21-19, 21-16, 21-13.

This wasn't even the best Chinese team on show and they still had both the finalists in the men's and the women's section, which really goes a long way to show the paucity of real talent on the Indian table tennis scene.

The fact that Chetan Baboor reached the semi-finals is an acheivement despite the fact that none of the top Asian players were present.
