Paes undergoes heavy training

Indian Davis Cup team's non-playing captain Ramesh Krishnan on Monday attempted to downplay suggestions that the country's trump card Leander Paes is short of match-practice before the all-important World Group play-off tie against the United States.

"There's nothing you can do about it (lack of practice) now and even the Americans are in the same boat," Krishnan said.

Paes, who arrived on Sunday night at Winston-Salem, the venue for the October 12-14 match, was busy with the practice sessions on Monday, under the watchful eyes of Krishnan.

Paes tried to make most of his lack of practice by undergoing intense training at his US base at Orlando.

The 28-year-old, who has a remarkable record in Davis Cup play, has been focussing mentally on what is a major tie for India and where he knows much depends on his own personal performance.

Indeed, Paes's possible singles clash with Todd Martin on the opening day could have a vital bearing on the tie. If Paes can win this rubber and then the doubles on the second day, India could have a psychological advantage.

Krishnan has to decide by Thursday morning when the draw for the tie takes place, who will be the other singles player.

There is a possibility he will opt for Mahesh Bhupathi, Paes's doubles partner, who was picked against Japan in April en route to the World Group qualifying round.

However, the captain refused to commit himself, stressing he would decide in course of practice over the next few days.
