United lose to Bolton at Old Trafford as Arsenal go top

Champions Manchester United, who could have gone top in England if results had gone their way, crashed to a 2-1 home defeat to Bolton Wanderers on Saturday -- their second defeat at Old Trafford in four days.

Juan Veron gave United the lead with a blistering freekick after 26 minutes before Kevin Nolan equalised nine minutes later. Michael Ricketts scored Bolton's winner six minutes from time.

It was the first time in the nine-year history of the premier league that United had lost at home after taking the lead in a match.

Arsenal went top despite being held to a 3-3 draw by Blackburn Rovers at Highbury.

Arsenal top the table on goal difference from Leeds with both teams on 18 points, but Leeds will go back on top on Sunday if they take at least a point from their match against Chelsea at Elland Road.

Aston Villa lost their unbeaten record with a 3-2 defeat at Everton, despite a goal from Villa keeper Peter Schmeichel, while Dave Bassett's first home match as Leicester manager ended in a 4-1 defeat to Liverpool with Robbie Fowler scoring a hat-trick.
