No. 2 seed Jennifer Capriati (USA) defeated No. 19 Barbara Schett of Austria in just no time at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The win marks the first time that Capriati, the 2001 Australian Open and French Open champion, has surpassed the fourth round at the US Open since 1991, when she lost in the semifinals to Monica Seles.
