US Open 2001

No. 1 seed and fan favorite Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil was defeated in straight sets in only 1 hour 32 minutes in their quarterfinal matchup at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

This was Kuerten and Kafelnikov's 11th head-to-head matchup. Kuerten won seven of the first 10 and three in a row leading up to today's match.

"I thought if I got to quarters or semis that I would have a better chance but it went the opposite way than I thought, It was the first match that I didn't play well in three or four months," said Kuerten.
