Anand in round 2 of Eurotel championship

Former World champion Vishwanathan Anand defeated Grandmaster Jan Timman of The Netherlands to move into second round of the Eurotel World Chess Trophy knockout tournament on Sunday.

Playing strong and slow, Anand pressed into Timman, forcing him to resign after 46 moves in the first game, with black pieces.

In the second game, the Indian outmanoeuvered his opponent in just 22 moves, for a 2:0 victory.

Anand plays Alexander Khalifman in the next round. Khalifman defeated Victor Bologan 1.5-0.5 to move into the second round.

Playing white, Garry Kasparov beat the lowest-seed, Brazilian Gilberto Milos in 53 moves. Then, playing black, he set up a strong defense that eventually allowed him to launch an attack against Milos and win the game. Kasparov plays Judith Polgar next.

Englishman Michael Adams struggled to beat fifteen-year-old Teimur Radjabov of Azerbaijan 2.5-1.5. in his opening match. He meets Ivan Sokolov of Bosnia and Hercegovina.

After the first eight matches in round one there was just one surprise. Sokolov managed to beat Peter Leko (winner of the recent FIDE Grand Prix event) in the tie-break games. Leko lost the first blitz game on time and could not manage to fight back in the second game.

For the first time since the Corus Wijk Ann Zee tournament in January 2001, the Big Three of World Chess - Gary Kasparov of Russia, his compatriot and conqueror, Vladimir Kramnik and Anand are competing together. The tournament will be played on a series of knockout games while the final will be two rounds of classical chess.

Blitz games will be played in case of a tie.

The world's top 32 players are participating in the tournament, which carries total prize-money of 500,000 Euros.

The time control is 25 minutes to each player, plus an addition of five seconds after every move is played till the final, which will be a seven-hour session.

The hot favourite to win the crown is Kasparov, who turned 39 a fortnight ago. If his success at the recent Linares Super Grandmasters tournament and not age is an indicator, the greatest player of all time has enough chess left in him.
