Having come agonisingly close to ending her Grand Slam jinx at the Australian Open in January -- where she let slip four match-points to lose the championship to Capriati -- Hingis's year went into freefall after she had to undergo ankle surgery in May to repair damaged ligaments.

But she cast aside fears the injury was career-threatening by making a successful comeback at this month's Canadian Open.
