Canada's Alexandre Despatie, a former national athlete of the year, the 1998 10-metre Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth champion and still only 17 years of age, took a wobble after a poor second dive but recovered brilliantly to win the gold in the men's 1m springboard diving.
