Myanmar, Taiwan draw

June 17, 2003 21:20 IST

Myanmar snatched a 1-1 draw against Taiwan today in a Group B match in the AFC women's championship, despite conceding an early goal and having a player sent off.

But the match has no impact on the next round as the semi-final spots have already been decided -- defending champion North Korea will play Japan, and South Korea will meet China in the two semi-final matches on Thursday.

Both goals in today's game came in the first-half, with Taiwan scoring first on 16 minutes through midfielder Cheng Yu-hsing.

Myanmar, whose game is built around pace down the flanks, were reduced to 10 players three minutes later when Moe Moe-war was shown the red card for a strong, but not malicious, tackle on Tseng Shu-o.

Myanmar scored the equaliser on 31 minutes when a cross from Thet Thet-win found Nhin Si-myint on the edge of the area. Taiwan goalkeeper Huang Feng-chiu managed to get both hands to the shot but the ball slipped through her fingers and bounced over the line for an own goal.

The result means Taiwan will go back home with two wins, a draw and one defeat from its four games. Myanmar has a similar record but a worse goal difference from Taiwan.
