Chandra, Kelly Fisher best

September 03, 2003 20:44 IST

Sixth-seed Manan Chandra of Delhi and world No 1 woman player and top seed Kelly Fisher of England won the men's and women's titles respectively in the Rs. 400,000 CCI invitation snooker tournament in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Chandra, despite a lacklustre performance, sidelined unseeded Rupesh Shah of Gujarat 6-3 in the men's final, while Fisher crushed former national champion Anuja Thakur of Maharashtra 4-0 in a one-sided women's final.

Delhi lad Chandra, who had a fine run in the tournament, beating second-seed and national champion Pankaj Advani of Karnataka and third-seed and former Asian champion Yasin Merchant of Mumbai, was not his usual self on Wednesday. Nevertheless, he managed to keep his cool during tight situations to run-away with the winner's cheque of Rs 75,000.

Shah, who had to be content with Rs 45,000, started off with a bang, winning the first frame 70-18 with a break of 63, which turned out to be the best break of the match.

Manan won the second frame at 70-47, after Shah missed a pot on the brown. Though the Gujarat lad made it up by winning the third frame 46-43 with a black ball finish, Manan bounced back in style, winning the next two frames at 67-15 and 68-26.

Shah made it 3-all by winning the sixth frame at 57-45 before Manan rattled away the next three frames -- 57-32, 69-8 and 45-11 -- in pretty quick time.

Fisher, who took home Rs 60,000 for her efforts, failed to come up with any big breaks. She won the first frame 66-29 with a break of 27.

In the next frame, she did fairly better by chalking out a 29 break to win 75-31. It was in the third frame that the Englishwoman, who was unwell since the past three days, really showed her mettle with a break of 44 to win the frame at 67-25.

With the Maharashtra lass staring at a 0-3 deficit, it was just a matter of time before Kelly wrapped up the match with a 73-46 win in the fourth frame.
