Viratprasert wins ITF crown

September 13, 2003 18:40 IST

Playing with confidence, favourite and top seed Suchanan Viratprasert of Thailand added one more singles title to her kitty when she easily defeated India's Megha Vakharia 6-2, 6-1 in the final of the Indian Oil Servo ITF women's tennis tournament in Bangalore on Saturday.

This is the sixth ITF singles title for Suchanan, who won in Delhi last week. She won $1600 for her effort.

"I am happy on winning. She [Megha] did not play as she played yesterday and the day before," Viratprasert said after her victory.

Viratprasert won the first five games in the first set, thanks to unforced errors committed by Vakharia, who displayed a semblance of a fight by winning the sixth and seventh games. But the Indian's poor backhand helped the Thai win the eighth game and take the set 6-2.

In the second set, Vakharia's poor performance continued as Viratprasert surged into the lead, winning the first four games.

Vakharia won the fifth game but the Thai took the next two to emerge victorious.

Vakharia said "My returns were bad. She [Viratprasert] had to do nothing to defeat me."

The Indian lass, who earned $1,000  runner-up, had put up a consistent performance in this tourney, beating seeded players on way to the final.
