Indian athletes disappoint

Indian athletes finished medalless on the third day of the 15th Asian Athletics Championships in Manila on Monday.

L Aruna Devi, who had bagged the bronze medal in the 10,000m for women on the opening day, finsihed fifth in 5000m with a timing of 17m 31.67 seconds.

The gold medal in the event went to Sun Jingjie of China (15:48.42) while Japan's Yiko Mahabe bagged the silver, with a timing of 15:59.81. Hiromi Fujii, also of Japan, took the bronze (16:31.61).

The Indians also disappointed in the women's hammer throw, as Hardeep Kaur and Ritu Rani finished fifth and sixth respectively.

While Hardeep Kaur hurled the hammer to a distance of 58.18m, her compatriot managed 53.30m in the event, which was dominated by Chinese athletes who claimed the first two positions.

Gu Yuan's 70.78m effort fetched her the gold and Liu Yinghui (66.66m) took the silver. Masumi Aya (64.04) of Japan had to be content with the bronze medal.

India are placed 11th in the medal tally with two silver and an equal number of bronze medals so far. China are way ahead with 13 gold, seven silver and six bronze medals.

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Qatar and Kuwait are in joint second position with two gold medals each.
