Gagan Narang set a new meet record in 10 metres air rifle and won the gold while Samaresh Jung added to the Indian gold tally by winning the men's 50 metres pistol event in the Commonwealth Shooting Championships in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Narang scored 699.7 points (597+102.7) to better the four-year-old record of Abhinav Bindra, set in Bisley, England [Images].

Jun Hong Ong of Singapore was second with 695.1 and Chris Hector of England finished third at 693.4.

Jung shot 653.3 (557+96.3) to clinch the gold ahead of Michael Gault of England and Australian Daniel Repacholi.

India have so far won 10 gold, five silver and two bronze medals in the meet.

In the trap team event, Mansher Singh kept his medal hopes alive shooting 72/75 to finish at the second spot on the first day.

The medallists will be decided on Wednesday.

India narrowly missed out on a podium finish in the women's 25 metres pistol event when Shushma Rana and Saroja Kumari ended fourth and fifth respectively.

Australian Lalita Yauhleuskaya won the gold.
