Sporting edge past Salgaocar

Sporting Clube de Goa [Images] edged past Salgaocar 5-4 in the penalty shootout to enter the final of the 27th Federation Cup football tournament at the Nehru stadium in Margao on Thursday.

The match went into the penalty shootout after both teams were locked at 1-1 at the end of extra time.

It was Salgaocar, who struck first through Micky Fernandes in the 41st minute, but Edeh Chidi levelled scores for Sporting in the 72nd minute to take the match into extra time.

Sporting enjoyed the upperhand in extra time, but failed to beat goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee.

In the penalty shootout, Menino Fernandes missed the first penalty for Salgaocar, which proved to be decisive in the end as Sporting won the contest 5-4.

In the final they will take on Mumbai's Mahindra United, who had thrashed Churchill Brothers 4-1 in the first semi-final.
