Kramnik vs Topalov: Ready to checkmate

September 18, 2006

Topalov, a 31-year-old player from Bulgaria and the highest rated player with an Elo of 2813, considers himself the true champion, since he holds the governing body's crown.

'The world champion should be ready to show that he is the best at all times and this is why I accepted the match.'

'There was a lot of interest and there was money, so I thought "why not?"'

' 'Things should be decided on a chess board and if you try to hide it doesn't work. The point is not only the title but to show everyone that you are the best,' he said.

Kramnik, who returned to playing only six months ago after a serious illness, was reported saying that he is happy to contest the title.

The Russian too is 31 years old and is rated No 4 in the world with an Elo of 2743.

'The whole world of chess has been waiting for this unification match for a long time. It is a big event for both of us.'

'I was happy when the president decided to arrange it here. Elista is a good place for a chess match, because it is rather quiet and you need concentration. I prefer it to playing in cities like London or New York, where there are many things that can distract you.'

The two champions have played 39 games against each other. Kramnik is ahead on 10 wins, 24 draws and 5 losses, which makes him the favourite for the crown.
