World TT: Indian men beat Nigeria, women lose to Australia

Indian men and women experienced contrasting fortunes at the World Team Table Tennis Championships as the former blanked Nigeria 3-0 but the eves went down 2-3 to Australia.

Soumyadeep Roy set India on its way, securing a 12-10 9-11 11-9 11-9 victory over Nosiru Kazeem in a hard-fought encounter in Guangzhou, China.

India's top paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal then beat Monday Meotohun 12-10 14-12 11-9.

Amalraj Anthony clinched the tie recording a thrilling 11-5 6-11 14-12 8-11 11-8 win over Hakeem Hassan.

India will now play for the 33rd place in the second division against Slovenia, who thrashed Argentina 3-0.

However, it was a different story for the Indian women as they lost 2-3 to Australia to be relegated to a play-off for the 31st place in the second division.

They let go a 2-1 lead and allowed the Aussie girls to clinch the hard-fought tie.

Neha Agarwal beat Miao Miao 11-4 4-11 4-11 11-7 11-5 to give India a good start.

Jian Fang Lay drew parity with a 11-5 13-11 11-9 win over Poulomi Ghatak. Mouma Das restored India's advantage beating May Cho 12-10 11-7 12-10.

But India failed to finish the job as Poulomi went down tamely to Miao Miao 11-7 11-6 11-5, before Neha Agarwal succumbed to Jian Fang Lay in a tough encounter 11-9 7-11 11-6 13-15 11-2.

India, which went down 2-3 to Serbia in the play-off for 25-28th places, will now face Luxembourg in a fight for 31st spot.
