Sambalpur is located in the northwest corner of the state of Orissa and is an important textile centre of the state. Sambalpuri saris are an important export out of this area.

The city -- population 200,000 or so -- is on the Southeastern Railway line and is connected by regular trains to Calcutta, Madras and Tatanagar. There is a regular bus service between Sambalpur and Rourkela, Ranchi, Raipur, Bhubaneshwar and Puri.
