Another obligatory pilgrimage, at Varanasi, is the perambulation of the Panchkosi, a trek which follows the perimeter of the holy city for a distance of 36¼ miles. The journey is divided into 6 stages and takes as many days. Anyone dying within this perimeter, irrespective of his religion, is apparently instantly transported to Heaven.
