The very tall Kandariya Mahadeo temple in the western group, dedicated to Shiva, is the largest temple and very representatative of Khajuraho architecture.

Chaunsat Yogini, also in the western group, honours Kali and is the odd temple out being built of granite. It is also believed to be the oldest shrine, built around 900 AD.
