Adalaj step well
Nineteen km north of Ahmedabad, this is one of the finest of the
Gujarati step wells, or baolis. It was built by Queen Rudabaiin 1499 and is a cool and secluded retreat during the hot
summer months.
The well has five octagonal levels, with sculptures on each level. No flash photography is allowed.

Sabarmati Ashram
Six km from the centre of town, the ashram was founded in 1918. Situated on the west bank of the Sabarmati
river, this was where Gandhi lived for 12 years. The Mahatma started the historic Salt March from here as a part of his nonviolent campaign against British rule. His spartan living quarters are preserved as a small museum. The ashram is open from 8.30 am to 6.30 pm. Admission is free.

Calico Museum of Textiles
The Calico Museum of Textiles exhibits antiques and modern textiles
including rare tapestries, wall hangings and costumes. The museum is housed in Sarabhai House,
a former haveli, owned by one of Gujarat's most illustrious industrial families. It includes exquisite pieces made for the British and Portuguese and has embroidered tents and robes owned by
the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.

Hawa Mahal
Built in 1799, the Hawa Mahal -- or Palace of the Winds -- is one
of Jaipur's major landmarks. Actually, it is little more
than a facade. Situated on the main street of the old city, it was
originally built to enable ladies of
the royal household to watch everyday life go by.
The pink, semioctagonal and delicately honeycombed
sandstone windows give an
excellent view of the city. Built by Maharaja
Sawai Pratap Singh it is part of the City Palace complex.
The street below is a good shopping area for Rajasthani clothes, shoes,
jewellery etc. All at a good price.

Jaipur
The Pink City, Jaipur has been a must for every tourist visiting
India for many, many years. The pink buildings
in the old walled city are symbolic of Rajput hospitality.
Jaipur was founded by the warrior-astronomer Maharaja Jai Singh II (1699-1744).
It stands on a dry lake bed, surrounded by barren hills.
