• Adam Gilchrist (when on 38) became the eighth Australian and 39th batsman in LOIs to reach 5000 runs. Gilchrist now has 5061 runs in 158 matches.
• Gilchrist (99) became the first batsman in World Cup history to miss a century by one run. Sachin Tendulkar (98) had missed his by two runs a week ago against Pakistan at this same venue on 1-3-2003.
• Gilchrist became the third keeper in LOIs to miss a hundred by one run. The others are:  Zimbabwean Andy Flower (99 not out) against Australia at Harare on 24-10-1999 and Sri Lankan Romesh Kaluwitharana (99) against Zimbabwe also at Harare on 18-12-1999.
• Gilchrist, who became the 18th batsman (and the third Australian after Dean Jones and Matthew Hayden) to score a 99 in LOIs, became the only third batsman to be run-out one short of the hundred. South African Graeme Smith (v Sri Lanka at this ground on 29-11-2002) and Sri Lankan Santh Jayasuriya (v England at Adelaide on 17-1-2003) are the others to do so.
• Ponting became the first Australian batsman to hit three hundreds against Sri Lanka. Teammate Gilchrist, who missed mark by one run, has two hundreds against Sri Lanka.
• Ponting became the first Australian captain to register four hundreds in LOIs. Leading the side in his 33rd match he went past the tally of three hundreds by former Australian captain Greg Chappell (in 49 matches).
• Ponting, when on 85 became the fifth Australian to aggregate 1000 runs as captain. He now has 1029 runs to his credit.
• Ponting, becomes the only second Australian captain to score a hundred in the World Cup after Steve Waugh (120 not out v South Africa at Leeds in 1999).
• The only other Australian to score a hundred at this ground before Ponting has been Michael Bevan (103 against the home side on 10-4-1997).
•  Australia (319-5) became the first visiting team cross 300 runs at this ground. Three other 300-plus scores at this ground were made by the home side. The previous highest score by a visiting team at this venue was the 287-5 also by the Australians on 10-4-1997.
• Aravinda De Silva's 92 extended his own record of most nineties by a batsman in LOIs. He now has nine such scores - the most by any batsman in LOI history. Following him with seven scores in the nineties are: Indians Mohammad Azharuddin and Sachin Tendulkar, New Zealander Nathan Astle and Zimbabwean Grant Flower.
• During his above innings, De Silva became the highest run-getter for Sri Lanka in the World Cup with 1028 runs in 32 matches. He went past the previous best of 969 runs (in 30 matches) by Arjuna Ranatunga.
• De Silva also became the fifth batsman in World Cup history to aggregate 1000 runs. The full list: Sachin Tendulkar (1533 runs in 29 matches), Javed Miandad (1083 in 33), Aravinda De Silva (1028 in 32), Viv Richards (1013 in 23) and Mark Waugh (1004 in 22).
• The partnership of 54 runs between De Silva and Dilhara Fernando was Sri Lanka's best for the 8th wicket against Australia, eclipsing the previous best of 44 runs between Sanath Jayasuriya and Rumesh Ratnayake at Adelaide on 18-2-1990.
• Glenn McGrath now has 31 wickets (in 19 matches) against Sri Lanka - the most by an Australian bowler. He went past the previous record of 29 wickets (in 18 matches) held by Shane Warne.
• The man of the match award was Ponting's 14th in 164 matches. However, this was his first in a World Cup match in 24 matches.
• This was Australia's 14th successive undefeated World Cup match (including the Birmingham tie in 1999) since 27-5-1999. Its last defeat in the World Cup came on 23-5-1999 at Leeds when Pakistan won by 10 runs! For the record, West Indies from 1975 to 1983 had lost just one match (to India at Manchester in 1983) in 16 matches. However Australia has the best win sequence by a team in the World Cup.
• Australia meanwhile extended its winning streak in LOIs to a record 13 consecutive victories since 11-1-2003.
