Nasser Hussain

Nasser Hussain was the surprise of the day, replacing Nick Knight in the opener's slot. A bit harsh that, one thought -- Stewart's poor run has been even more prolonged than his opening partner's.

Understandably -- after all, he didn't get to play the warmups in that slot -- Hussain looked a touch rusty at the start of his innings.

England however weren't facing too big an ask, so Hussain could take his time to settle down. And he seemed to have done just that, batting himself into a semblance of touch. He was just beginning to move his feet well when Muralitharan came on, in the 13th over.

Off the first ball, Hussain should have been out. Dancing a long way down, he missed the ball entirely, but the pad kept it out of Kaluwitharana's reach.

In the next over, though, he went sashaying out again -- and this time, the ball spun just enough to go through the gate, to the keeper, leaving Hussain comfortably stranded. England's problems at the top of the order, judging on the evidence thus far, are a long way from being solved.

Hussain stumped Kaluwitharana bowled Muralitharan 14/33, FoW: 1-50 (over 14.5)
