'Al Qaeda outfit in Bangladesh helping
NE insurgents'
March 04, 2003 02:49 IST
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Monday said an Al Qaeda affiliate in Bangladesh is helping northeastern insurgent outfits.
This information had been given to the central government leaders, Sarkar said while addressing newsmen in New Delhi, adding he would ask the Centre to retain the army personnel deployed in the state for the recently concluded assembly elections.
Sarkar, who will be sworn in as the next chief minister on March 7, following the CPI-M victory in the state, said he would also demand the speedy expediting of the fencing work along the porous Indo-Bangladesh border to combat activities of insurgent outfits 'backed by the ISI [Inter Service Intelligence]'.
"We would like to ask the Centre to put pressure on Bangladesh to destroy the terrorist camps there," he said.
Describing the recent assembly election in the state as one of the 'toughest and most fierce battles', he said the poll results reflected the people's rejection of the Congress' 'unholy alliance' with a National Liberation Front of Tripura-backed party.
