Thrust of engines filled the air as fighter planes streamed out for a thrilling air show in the honour of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] during his first visit to Gwalior after assuming office in 2005.

The Indian Air Force displayed mock combat interception missions and multi-directional strikes in what turned out to be a non-stop excitement for people below.

Su-30s and MK I-III demonstrated a combination of stealth, manoeuvrability and integrated avionics.

In combat interception missions, a pair of Mirage 2000 and Su-30 aircraft were positioned overhead the airfield to guard it against six intruding fighters carrying out strikes from three directions.

What followed was a precise mock combat drill in which an interceptor aircraft shot down the striking fighter.

An IL-78, capable to refuel IAF front line fighters in flight, flew past the prime minister with two Mirage 2000 that took fuel from two of its hoses.

A scintillating low-level aerobatic display by Su-30 MKI aircraft, the very latest entrant in the IAF, became another attraction at the air show.

The prime minister, whose visit to the Gwalior Air Force Station is his first to any air operation base since taking office, also saw a static display of front line fighters and the IAF's missile systems.
