The Bowlers

Derek Underwood

Deadly was his nickname. That is what he exactly was on a slightly damp pitch. A left arm spinner, his pace varied with the conditions, but at most times he was slow-medium.

A remarkable characteristic of his bowling was his unfailing length and accuracy, which got him as many if not more wickets than his subtle variations of flight and the in-swinging arm ball.

His 54 wickets are the maximum by any visiting bowler in India. Underwood toured India in 1972-73, 1976-77, 1979-80, 1981-82.
