Garbeta carnage accused arrested

Mastan Ali Mandal, an accused in the Choto Angra carnage in Garbeta block of Midnapore district, in which 18 people were alleged to have been burnt on January four last, has been arrested, Midnapore's Additional Superintendent of Police S S Panda said in Midnapore on Sunday.

Panda said acting on a tip-off police raided Jaipuria forest areas bordering Bankura-Midnapore districts on Saturday evening and arrested Mondal.

Mandal was produced before a court in Midnapore, which ordered a seven-day police custody for him, the ASP said.

Mandal, a member of the Communist Party of India-Marxist local committee of Garbeta is the second person to be arrested in connection with the carnage, the ASP said.

He said police had in January arrested another person involved in the carnage.

Panda hoped that with Mandal's arrest police would help make a 'definite breakthrough' in the case.
