The Shah Hamadan Mosque was the first mosque ever built in Srinagar, Kashmir. Shah Hamadan, whose real name was Mir Sayed Ali Hamadni, came from Persia in the 13th century and was responsible for the spread of Islam in Kashmir.

The mosque, which stands on the banks of the River Jhelum, has a cubic architectural style in the tradition of a Sufi hanka (monastery) and is built almost entirely of wood. First built in 1395, the shrine was destroyed by fires in 1479 and again in 1731.
