In arid Rajasthan, the brief rainy season brought in precious water which had to last a whole year. Stepped cisterns or kunds such as this one in Abaneri provided the solution. Designed in the ninth century by Hindu rulers of the Pratihara dynasty, it was augmented with pavilions and cloisters in the Mughal era.

Beyond their functionality, kunds evolved into an art form. The Abaneri kund is completely underground with 35-metre-high walls on either side. The latticework of steps allows water to be drawn from any level.
