Henin proved herself on the world stage by reaching the Wimbledon final last year before losing to Venus Williams.

Although the petite Belgian had been in superb form in the first half of the year -- lifting the German Open title and reaching the final at the Italian Open -- she has been dogged by illness and injury since the French Open in May.

A finger fracture -- which she sustained during last month's Stanford tournament -- hampered her U.S. Open build-up as she was forced to pull out of the San Diego event.
