Priests wait here to receive Jagannath at his chariot. Curious and eager devotees can be seen sitting on to the main gate of the temple.The first day's ceremony starts at 8 am. The three km stretch of road between the temple of Jagannath and the Gundicha temple is known as the Grand road or the bada danda. This is the main area where all the action takes place. The chariots are parked just outside the main Jagannath temple. The idols are brought out and placed inside the chariots and these giant vehicles are drawn down the three km stretch, reaching Gundicha temple by 4 pm. The three deities are taken down from the chariots placed inside this temple. They remain here for eight days after which they are taken back.
