The frescoed interiors of the Convent of St Francis of Assisi in Old Goa has woodwork in the south Indian style, reflecting the influence of Indian artisans who worked for their colonial masters. Commissioned by the friars in 1517 and completed in 1520, the church was reconstructed in 1661. The interior of the church, with a deep nave and side aisles, is completely sculpted and frescoed and reflects an austere beauty.

The Portuguese took over Goa from the Muslims in 1510 and occupied it until 1961.
