Sunil Gavaskar

Heads and tales
Something about the conventional helmet offended Sunil Gavaskar's sense of aesthetics. And that led him to design his own form of protective gear -- a tight cover for his temples, mostly worn under his trademark floppy hat. Obviously, the thought that he could get hit in the face never occured to him -- swaying out of the line of the lifting ball was an art he had perfected against the West Indies quicks. This photo of Gavaskar's distinctive headgear dates to the Indian team's 1986 tour of England.
